ViEWS: Guidelines for Departmental Plans
Discipline-Specific ViEWS (Visual Expression, Written and Spoken) Communication Requirement
Virginia Tech is committed to ensuring that every graduate can effectively use a variety of spoken, visual, and written communication strategies. Degree granting programs will identify the communication demands of their disciplines and verify that the curriculum meets these needs. Degree-granting programs will prepare an undergraduate curriculum plan showing a sequenced approach to learning and practicing communication strategies, integrated across the major.
The plan must include the following in a 3 to 4 page report:
- A brief statement of departmental and/or program goals and objectives for an integrated, sequenced approach to spoken, visual, and written communication,
- A plan for developing and implementing a curriculum reflecting these goals and objectives, including an outline of phasing, and
- A plan for assessing outcomes. (The assessment report is to be included in the departmental report on student outcomes assessment activities.)
Plans are to be submitted by the colleges to the University Core Curriculum Committee by December 8, 2004.
